Vintage gay photography

These images from Walter Reuben Inc.'s collection depict same-sex couples and groups expressing affection, friendship, and other forms of intimacy. Many are from the earliest days of photography. In a series of photographs, men from around the world kiss, hug, picnic and gaze into each others’ eyes. So far, more than 4, such images—all taken between the s and s—have been found. Gay men were commonly seen by society as perverts who had chosen their sexuality, or as diseased individuals whose sexuality was caused by their upbringing and biology, and not something they were born with.

Thanks to the pair’s formidable research and passion, today their collection amounts to over 2, vintage photographs spanning from roughly to , shot in Australia, Bulgaria, Canada. These images depict same-sex couples and groups expressing affection, friendship, and intimacy — decades before it was acceptable. They say true love knows no bounds — yet not everyone can quite understand this concept and try to enforce their own views on how love should look like.

This is especially prevalent when it comes to love between gay…. Tired of this prejudice, former priest Nathan Monk has collected a series of vintage photos of gay couples, proving they were always there but were afraid of openly showing their feelings.
