The episode was conceived from a joke among Parker and fellow co-creator Matt Stone about a fish dressed as motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel, which eventually turned into a joke about Kanye West not understanding a joke about why liking fishsticks made him a gay fish. Ever since the episode aired in , Kanye has had beef with the comedians who dared insinuate that he might be a gay fish — though, just as it happened in the episode, the joke still soars above his head some 14 seasons later. "Gay Fish" is a parody of the song "Heartless" by Kanye West, featured in the Season Thirteen episode, "Fishsticks". This song, along with "Jackin' it in San Diego", was released on a 7-inch vinyl record for Record Store Day on April 20, [1].
