In , we wrote about a false claim that Elsa would have a female love interest in Frozen's sequel. In , we found that an article that claimed Disney had announced Elsa would be a lesbian. Some of us in the fandom like to think that Elsa is gay, seeing his age struggles to hide her powers as a metaphor for hiding in the closet, and not having a love interest. Disney should officially make Elsa part of the LGBTQ community in Frozen 3, but not by giving her a romantic partner.

Elsa has no romantic interests in both Frozen and Frozen 2, and this isn't necessarily a bad thing. It might simply mean that she is asexual and aromantic. If the rumor turns out to be true, Elsa's sexuality will be explored in the third installment of the Frozen franchise — a film that has yet to be announced but likely will come to fruition.

The. Then in the sequel, six years later, Disney seemingly leaned into Elsa’s sexuality even more so with the arrival of Honeymaren (Rachel Matthews), a member of the Northuldra trapped inside the. That was Frozen writer and co-director Jennifer Lee, back in February, discussing the murmurs that Elsa would become the first gay Disney Princess — following endless speculation that the movie implied that she was, indeed, a lesbian.

Prior to that, she co-wrote the screenplay to the historical drama Hidden Figures — a film lauded for its empowerment of women and minorities. Could she have been brought on to help make this bold choice even clearer, or was she perhaps brought in to soften its edges and make it more subtle?

At this point, no one knows. But that was played very gently. And that was important to me. It should be interesting to see how Disney and the creative team behind the sequel play things with Frozen 2. Will her sexuality be part of the story, complete with a female love interest? Will it be merely hinted at?

Also of note about the current script is that it seems to flashback quite a bit. The current cast of characters in the script includes younger versions of sisters Elsa and Anna, but also- and most notably- their mother, the Queen of Arendelle , who died alongside the King early on in the first movie!
