Within 90 days, educators in Ohio will be forbidden from discussing LGBTQ + identities — unless it's to forcibly out queer students to their guardians. Ohio’s Republican Gov. Mike DeWine signed legislation Wednesday requiring educators to reveal a student’s gender identity to their families and allow parents to opt their kids out of lessons.

Columbus, Ohio – Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) — the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization — condemned the Ohio House of Representatives for passing HB 8, a bill modeled after Florida’s “Don’t Say LGBTQ+” bill, and HB 68, which, as amended, would prohibit.

Our family also has regular movie nights, we try new restaurants whenever we can, and we love riding bikes through Franklin Park. I teach my child to be kind to others, not to bully, to be respectful of people who are different than he is. Likewise, states that force teachers to out students have made transgender students less safe, not more.

Meanwhile, young people will suffer , regardless of the outcome. Barring that, Gov. Mike DeWine must veto it and build a school system that is inclusive of all Ohio families, including mine.
