I managed to get to all three but Mary did much better she was in the parade and she managed to get a single ticket for the Prom concert not that I am at all jealous. It was held in Hull, as we are the city of Culture this year it was also a significant milestone for LGBT people as in it is 50 years since homosexuality was largely decriminalised.

I was struck by the good humour of the crowd and the mutual respect shown by the participants of the parade, onlookers and the police who were there to protect them. I felt quietly a little proud of my country and its people who were able to celebrate diversity in a relaxed and joyful way. We are a more tolerant society than the doomsayers on the right would like you to believe. Finally well done all the police officers that managed the parade and the concert afterwards with common sense and good humour I saw some wonderful interactions between the public and the officers.

I am also pleased that unlike some other countries none of them were carrying firearms nor did they need too. It was a weekend of parades. Saturday was the Mermaid Parade , and Sunday was the Gay Pride Parade - somehow simultaneously both a more serious and a more frivolous event. My year old daughter joined me briefly at some point, and said that while she understands that some people are gay, and that is fine, "why are those people marching in their underwear?

Based on my experience at the Mermaid Parade yesterday, I headed for the staging area of the parade for a different and more up-close-and-personal perspective.
